What your child should wear this summer

It’s summertime! Finally your child can ditch his school uniform for cool summer wear. Make sure you’ve got these summer must-haves to protect your child this hot season.

  1. Hats. Hats are all about protecting your child’s head, eyes, and neck. They come in lots of different forms. Wide-brim ones are recommended as these offer ample cover.
  2. Eyeshades. Sunglasses are important to protect the eyes from harmful UV rays. They come in different shapes, color and sizes. For kids, there are shades that come with a cord to avoid being misplaced. However, fake and cheap sunglasses may harm your child’s eyes as these may not offer UV protection. Ask an eye doctor for help in choosing the right pair for your child.
  3. Tops. Remember, summer clothes should keep your child cool and comfy. As a rule, stick to cotton clothes as these are “breathable” and light. Choose light-colored clothes as these absorb less heat than dark-colored ones. Go for loose-fitting tops. Tight clothes tend to insulate heat.
  4. Bottoms. Children would prefer to wear shorts or skirts this summer because these are cooler than jeans or pants. There are lots of options you and your child may choose from. Again, go for cotton or jersey and avoid synthetic, flannel, or silk-type clothing. If your child is going to spend the day outdoors, choose lightweight pants. These will help protect him from insect bites.
  5. Footwear. Flip-flops and sandals are definitely going to be part of your child’s summer wardrobe. Not only will these be comfortable, these will also help protect your child from contracting infections (in public showers) or from stepping on some jagged stone or shell (on the beach).
  6. Skin care. Make sure your child is covered head to toe with sunscreen. Choose a water resistant sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) 15 to 30. Reapply every two hours or after your child leaves the water. These will help protect your child from sunburn and skin cancer.

For camping trips, picnics, or other outdoor activities, bring insect repellants and apply according to the product’s instructions. This will help prevent your child from getting diseases like malaria or dengue.

Apply lotion or moisturizer to your child regularly to avoid dry skin. There are products that moisturize the skin minus the sticky feel.

Because of the heat, your child would want to take frequent showers throughout the day. Have him use a mild soap to prevent his skin from drying.

Go ahead, get your child all geared up for a fun-filled summer!
