3 habits that help prevent obesity revealed
A recent study shows that a child is 40% less likely to be obese if he eats dinner regularly with his family, spends less than two hours of TV daily, and gets enough sleep. This is according to the study’s lead author Sarah Anderson, an assistant professor of epidemiology in the College of Public Health at Ohio State University in Columbus.
And because childhood obesity is becoming a worldwide health concern, it is important for mothers to know more about it.
Causes of childhood obesity
Childhood obesity is caused by a number of factors. Number one of these is genetics. Obese parents tend to raise obese children. However, the surge in obese children worldwide could not be attributed to genes alone. Habits, or behavioral patterns, are also to blame. These include snacking too much and too often, spending hours in inactivity, or sticking to a fast-food diet. Emotional and psychological stress may also cause a child to overeat. Illnesses, such as hypothyroidism, also cause obesity.
Effects of childhood obesity
Obesity is associated with a compromised immunity system. Once a child becomes obese, he becomes more susceptible to heart diseases, diabetes, joint and bone problems, gall and liver problems, sleep problems, early puberty and cancer. On top of that, an obese child tends to suffer from emotional and mental problems, such as depression. This also leads to eating disorders like bulimia or anorexia, or even to substance abuse.
Prevent childhood obesity
Here are other steps you can take to prevent your child from becoming obese:
- Basically, a child becomes obese when he eats more calories than he can burn. Encourage him to try out a physical sport such as swimming or basketball to keep him active regularly.
- Ensure that your pantry is filled with healthy snacks such as nuts and fruits. Steer him clear of junk food or too much fast food.
- Remove the TV, DVD, or computer from his room. Immerse him instead in books, art or other more stimulating activities.
- Be a role model for your child. Show him that you are happy healthy individual who enjoys nutritious food and an active lifestyle.
- Obesity is a family issue. Change family routines for the better. Keep communication lines among family members and address issues immediately. Let your child feel well loved. This would lessen your his stress and anxieties.
