More areas report measles outbreak

Six areas in the country are suffering from a measles outbreak according to the Department of Health (DoH). These include Baseco Compound in Tondo, Barangay Pulang Lupa in Las Piñas, Central Market in Dasmariñas Cavite , San Francisco in Quezon, and Balabagan in Lanao del Sur. Recently, small measles outbreaks have also been recorded in Tarlac, Antipolo, Masbate, Lambunao, Alabang and Parañaque.

189% increase in cases
The DoH has recorded a total of 954 cases from January 1 to February 20 for this year. Last year, there were only 330 cases for the same period. Aside from warning the public, the DoH is encouraging parents and children to get free vaccinations from public health centers. The DoH is also coordinating with the Department of Education (DepEd) on a fever watch. Students who show symptoms would be sent home immediately to avoid infecting others.

Measles symptoms
Measles is a viral disease that infects the respiratory system. Its symptoms include skin rashes or small red spots all over the body, along with weakness, fever, coughs, and runny nose. Measles is infectious for four days before and after the rashes appear.  It can cause complications such as diarrhea, pneumonia, and encephalitis among people with compromised immune systems. The good thing is, people who recover from measles will be immune to it for life.

Measles and children
Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air when an infected person sneezes or coughs. A person with measles may infect up to 18 people in a one day.
Measles usually erupts during the summer months since children have more time to spend outdoors with other kids who may not have been vaccinated.

Measles prevention
Because it is a viral disease, it has no cure and is usually left to run its course. However, it may be prevented with a vaccination. Aside from vaccinations, having a strong immune system is critical.

  • Proper hygiene also helps curb the spreading of measles. Frequent hand-washing is recommended.
  • Disinfect. Remember that the measles virus is able to survive on contaminated surfaces for two hours.
  • Mouths and noses must be covered when sneezing and coughing.
  • Used tissue must be discarded immediately.
  • Avoid crowded areas if possible.
  • Refrain from touching your nose, mouth, and eyes as these are entry points for the disease.
  • Strengthen your family’s immunity with a balanced diet, regular exercise, enough rest, and the right vitamins.
